Puffer fish: relief sought for traditional fishermen
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Fisheries Department, finding that fishing equipment valued at Rs.16 crores were destroyed by puffer fish, does not take into account the loss suffered by traditional fishermen, the Latheen Catholikka Matysa Thozhilali Federation has said.
Addressing a meeting of the federation here on Tuesday, its president Melvin Vinod said that out of the two-lakh fish workers in the State, only 20 per cent work in mechanised boats.
The department has taken into account only the loss incurred by the mechanised boat owners.
The fishing equipment of the 1.60 lakh traditional fishermen were also destroyed by puffer fish.
